Overview

Built for Speed, Reliability, and Productivity

The α9 II is designed to meet the demands of professional workflows. It offers sophisticated operability, enhanced network connectivity for improved field support, rugged, go-anywhere reliability, and unrivalled speed.

Built for Speed: Capture Previously Elusive Moments

The α9 II achieves high-speed continuous shooting at up to 20fps. Thanks to the groundbreaking full-frame Exmor RSTM CMOS sensor and BIONZ XTM processor, you can shoot at 20fps with AF/AE tracking. This combination delivers stunning high-speed performance and a generous buffer, allowing you to capture the decisive moment.

Blackout-Free Shooting

The electronic shutter eliminates the blackout typical of SLR mirror cameras. As a result, the subject remains visible during shutter release, with a 60fps live view and minimal display lag in continuous shooting. Furthermore, AF/AE calculations occur up to 60 times per second. Light reaches the image sensor seamlessly, without mechanical interruption, and mirrorless construction coupled with speed-enhancing technologies ensures that AF/AE operates at the full-frame focal plane.

Electronic Shutter for Unrivalled Speed

The electronic shutter provides shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec., far surpassing mechanical shutters and allowing for a new level of imaging expression. You can maintain a shallow depth of field without using an ND filter, even under bright conditions.

No Distractions, Just Silent Shooting

The anti-distortion electronic shutter captures scenes silently, eliminating the risk of mechanical mirror or shutter sounds disrupting the tension, such as during a sports event.

Anti-Flicker Shooting

The α9 II detects flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lighting, adjusting the shutter operation to suppress exposure and color anomalies. It also reduces inconsistency between continuous shots, ensuring your images remain consistent.

10fps with Mechanical Shutter

The mechanical shutter now supports continuous shooting at up to 10fps and can also be used with a flash. This high-speed continuous shooting mode is perfect for various scenes.

Full-Frame Stacked Integral-Memory CMOS Sensor

The 24.2-megapixel full-frame high-speed stacked image sensor uses integral memory to enable lightning-fast data readout. Together with the BIONZ X image-processing engine, this setup offers you true digital freedom.

Outstanding AF Performance: 4D FOCUS

The α9 II features 693 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection AF points, covering 93% of the image. The responsive, enhanced Fast Hybrid AF ensures swift AF, even in low light, with exceptional subject tracking.

Steadfast Tracking for Uninterrupted Focus

Even during shutter release, the continuous AF activation allows for precise tracking of subject movement. An optimized AF algorithm enhances AF accuracy and tracking, making it ideal for fast-moving subjects.

AI Meets Speed

Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF, powered by AI-based algorithms, process an enormous amount of data in real time. These technologies offer fast, precise, and intelligent tracking of your subject.

AI-Based Real-Time Tracking

Once you specify the subject, the camera maintains precise focus as long as you keep the shutter button half-pressed. The camera tracks any position changes, offering framing flexibility as you focus on capturing the perfect shot.

Instant Focusing on One Eye

Real-time Eye AF can maintain focus on one eye, even when another object passes in front. You can activate this by pressing the shutter button halfway, or by pressing AF-ON or a custom button.

Eye AF for Animals

The α9 II detects and tracks the eyes of both animals and humans, significantly increasing the success rate of capturing images of animals in the wild or pets at home.

Reliable Performance in Low Light

Advanced AF algorithms ensure accurate focusing even in low-light environments as dark as EV-3. The ‘Focus Priority in Aperture Drive’ option guarantees precise focusing in dim lighting, especially when using a stopped-down aperture.

Improved Focus Frame Usability

You can now move the focus area with the multi-selector, even with the shutter button half-pressed. Additionally, you can adjust the focus frame color to suit the scene, with red or white options available.

Exceptional Image Quality: Advanced Stacked CMOS Sensor

The α9 II boasts a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor with high sensitivity, back-illuminated configuration, and gapless on-chip lens architecture. These Sony innovations produce stunning images in various photographic situations.

The Latest Image Processing System

The advanced BIONZ X engine works alongside the front-end LSI to maximize the performance of the high-resolution sensor.

Superb Image Quality

The α9 II performs excellently at high sensitivities up to ISO 51200. With its advanced algorithms, it ensures smooth expression, including natural skin tones and seamless gradations in areas like the sky. It also offers 14-bit RAW output.

3.68 Million Dot Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder™

The 3.68 million-dot viewfinder (EVF) provides detailed images, while the 120fps finder frame rate ensures a smooth viewfinder image with minimal motion blur. Additionally, the fluorine coating on the lens repels dirt, making it easier to clean.

In-Body 5-Axis Optical Image Stabilization

In-body 5-axis optical image stabilization provides a 5.5-step shutter speed advantage. This feature, along with live-view monitor image stabilization, makes it easier to compose images, even with fast-moving subjects.

Beautiful 4K Movie Recording

The α9 II delivers stunning 4K movie recording, with full-pixel readout and no pixel binning. This enables the camera to condense approximately 2.4 times the data required for 4K, equivalent to the data needed for 6K. It also supports versatile features like Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF, and Touch Tracking.

Real-Time Eye AF for Movie Shooting

Real-time Eye AF now supports movie shooting by detecting and tracking the subject’s eyes, keeping them in sharp focus so you can concentrate on composition.

Touch Tracking for Persistent Focus

While shooting movies, Touch Tracking automatically focuses on and follows the subject selected on the LCD monitor. If the camera detects a human eye, Real-time Eye AF activates to track it.

Enhanced with Multi-Functional New Mic

The Multi Interface Shoe (MI Shoe) now includes a Digital audio interface, which allows you to record high-quality sound with minimized deterioration using the new ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone.

Pro Workflow Support: High-Speed Data Transfer

The α9 II supports smooth, reliable high-speed data transfer of large image files to an FTP server through a 1000BASE-T LAN terminal. FTPS guarantees high security.

FTP Data Transfers in the Background

To meet professional needs for quick delivery, the α9 II enables background FTP data transfers during and after shooting for both JPEG and RAW files. You can assign up to nine FTP servers in advance.

Add Voice Memos to Your Images

The new Voice Memo function lets you record audio descriptions of content or shooting conditions up to 60 seconds long. You can attach these memos to your images as .wav files and embed IPTC and camera serial number information.

Remote Operation with Remote Camera Tool

The Remote Camera Tool desktop application allows for remote operation, particularly useful in situations where photographer access is limited, such as when shooting a bird’s-eye view from a sports arena rooftop.

High-Speed Wireless Connectivity

In addition to 2.4GHz-band Wi-Fi®, the α9 II now supports high-speed data transfer via 5GHz-band Wi-Fi® (wireless LAN IEEE 802.11ac). Wireless PC remote shooting is also supported, freeing you from the limitations of cables.

Faster PC Remote Shooting with USB

The α9 II features a newly adopted USB Type-CTM connection, which significantly improves transfer rates. You can now transfer large uncompressed RAW images without workflow interruptions.

Built for Professionals: Easy Vertical Operation

The VG-C4EM vertical grip provides controls designed for vertical operation, ensuring a similar “feel” as when the camera is held horizontally.

Extend Shooting to Professional Length

With its high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery, the α9 II allows for extended shooting durations. You can also use two of these batteries in the VG-C4EM Vertical Grip for worry-free field shooting.

Dual Media Slots with UHS-II Support

Both media slots are compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II for fast data writing. You can record simultaneously or relay record, separating RAW/JPEG data and stills/movies, and copy data between cards.

Save and Load Camera Settings

The Save/Load Settings function lets you save and load camera settings to and from an SD card, making it easy to share settings between α9 II cameras. The “Save/Load FTP Settings” option allows for FTP-related settings sharing as well.

Efficient Image Selection

You can apply star ratings and protect images directly on the review playback display. Additionally, you can review large photo collections in 10 or 100-frame jumps and group-review continuous burst shots.

Improved Menu Interface

The updated menu interface makes custom key settings easier to understand, and you can quickly switch between menu tabs using the front dial or Fn button with one hand.

Creators’ Cloud Platform

Creators’ Cloud integrates advanced Sony camera technology with cloud-based AI to support creative work, from shooting to production. It serves as a platform for discovery and collaboration, offering web, mobile, and PC-based apps for efficient solutions.
