Description

The Brilliant² 4×5.65/138mm Variable Neutral Density Filter Fits in Most 4×5.65 Matte Boxes

The Brilliant² 4×5.65/138mm 1-Slot Variable Neutral Density Filter is 6mm thick and has been designed to fit into most 4×5.65″ matte boxes. As a result, it provides a range of 2 to 8 stops of light reduction, with ND values spanning from ND 0.6 (2 Stops) to ND 2.4 (8 Stops).

Thumb Wheel Gears are Calibrated: The filter is built with reduction gearing, which ensures that a 360-degree rotation of the thumb wheel gear results in 90 degrees of rotation of the main gear. This design allows the thumb wheel gear to be calibrated within units between 2 and 8 stops of light reduction. It should be noted, however, that the stop calibration is approximate and may not be exact.

Unique Tray Mount Design: The filter is inserted quickly and easily thanks to the unique tray mount design. Moreover, the handle features a standard 1/4–20 thread, which allows the attachment of a motor. If the motor is synchronized with the lens aperture, a variable depth-of-field effect can be achieved.

No Accidental Polarization or Cross Polarization: The Variable Neutral Density filters are constructed with two Lindsey Optics 138mm Brilliant Pol circular polarizers. One of the polarizers rotates, while the other remains fixed.

As is the case with all circular polarizers, the Brilliant Pol Circular Polarizer is made up of two internal components: a linear polarizer that reduces reflections when rotated, and a “quarter-wave plate” that spins the light. When utilized as a polarizer, the quarter-wave plate faces the camera lens, which effectively depolarizes the light entering the camera lens, preventing any cross polarization within the camera and lens system.

When constructing the Variable ND filter with circular polarizers, the glass is oriented such that the quarter-wave retarders face outward. This orientation ensures that both sides of the filter are depolarized, thereby preventing accidental polarization effects in the scene. Consequently, the Variable ND filter can be inserted into the matte box in either orientation.

Water White Optical Glass with Multi-Coating: The Brilliant-Pol Polarizing Filters used in the Variable Neutral Density filters are made from Schott B270 “water white” optical glass, and they feature a broadband multi-layer anti-reflection coating. This coating significantly reduces flare, stray light, and ghost images caused by filter-to-filter reflection. As a result, contrast and color saturation are increased. The filters are ground and polished to ensure flatness, thus preventing distortions or focus shifts, even with long focal-length lenses.

Large Diameter Clear Aperture: The included 138mm diameter polarizers provide a 5.1″ clear aperture, making them ideal for use with wide-angle lenses and large zoom lenses. Thus, the filter is versatile and suited for a variety of situations where high-quality images are required.

Quick and Sure No-Slip Rotation: The density change can be easily made by spinning either of the two thumb wheels manually or by using a motor mounted on the 1/4–20 thread in the handle.

The mechanical design of the filter is superior, It incorporates an all-aluminum main gear in which the 138mm Brilliant Pol Circular Polarizer filter is mounted. This main gear is supported by Delrin™ rollers, which provide smooth and no-slip rotation. Furthermore, the main gear is driven by aluminum thumb wheels that are geared with standard 0.8-pitch gear teeth, making the filter compatible with motorized wireless remote systems.

Works with RotaPol Circular Polarizer: When placed behind the RotaPol, the Variable ND filter works seamlessly, with both polarization and neutral density being controlled via motors and wireless FIZ systems. It is important to note, however, that the RotaPol must be positioned in front of the Variable Neutral Density filter (on the world side) for this system to function as intended.
