Overview

The Fast All-Round Zoom

The Samyang AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E offers a maximum aperture of F2 at its widest and F2.8 at the telephoto end. This lens covers five essential focal lengths (35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm, and 150mm), making it a versatile and fast all-rounder. It is designed to handle a broad range of shooting scenarios, from portraits to travel photography. Additionally, the lens incorporates the premium design and performance of 2nd Generation lenses while also supporting key features of recent Sony mirrorless bodies, such as Hybrid AF, Eye AF, Direct Manual Focus (DMF), and the AF assist function.

Short Minimum Focal Distance: 0.33m (1.08ft)

The AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E excels in close-up shooting performance, making it an ideal all-rounder zoom lens. At the 35mm wide-angle end, it offers a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of 0.33m. This, combined with the lens’s fast aperture, enables users to achieve a unique perspective and produce a beautifully blurred background. At the 150mm telephoto end, the MOD increases to 0.85m, making it perfect for dynamic close-up shots, including exaggerated portraits or food photography.

Outstanding Resolution from Corner to Corner

Thanks to its latest optical design, which includes 21 elements in 18 groups and a combination of 2 ASP, 1 HB, 3 HR, and 6 ED elements, this lens delivers superior optical performance across the entire zoom range. When paired with Sony’s full-frame image sensor, the AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E ensures high image quality with excellent contrast, even at the edges of the frame.

Impressive Bokeh with a Bright F2-F2.8 Aperture

The large aperture of the AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E creates an attractive background blur in the out-of-focus areas of your images. It effectively isolates the subject from the background using a shallow depth of field, capturing unique images with compressed backgrounds. Additionally, the lens employs 9 diaphragm blades to produce a smooth and visually pleasing bokeh.

Fast and Accurate AF Performance

With the Linear Stepping Motor (STM), the AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E provides fast, highly responsive autofocus, delivering excellent focus tracking and smooth transitions from Minimum Object Distance (MOD) to infinity. This fast maximum aperture also helps reduce noise and control camera movement by enabling a higher shutter speed or allowing you to use a lower ISO setting. Moreover, the lens supports Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF functions, while also providing in-camera lens corrections for shading, chromatic aberration, and distortion.

Enhanced Functionality with Custom Switch & Button

The AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 E includes two round, soft rubber buttons with a focus save function, allowing users to store two focus points. Additionally, three custom mode switches on the lens are programmable through the optional Lens Station. This customization lets you tailor the lens settings to suit your preferences.

Optimized Features for Video Shooting

  1. Dolly Zoom Shot: The Dolly Zoom is a cinematic technique that usually requires a professional dolly. However, this lens simplifies the process, making it easier to create dolly shots.
  2. Cinematic Video AF: When shooting video, the AF speed adjusts more carefully than in still photography, reducing wobbling and ensuring stable movie shooting.
  3. Linear MF Focus Control: This feature matches the torque of the focus ring to that of a manual focus lens, giving video shooters more control when shooting in manual mode.
  4. Digital Par-Focal: Digital Par-Focal maintains focus on the subject while zooming in or out, a feature typically found in expensive cine zoom lenses. This provides filmmakers with a more specialized experience and exceptional results.

Custom Switch:

In MODE 2, the focusing ring operates as an aperture adjustment ring, and in Linear MF mode, focus movement remains consistent regardless of the speed at which the focus ring is turned. When used with a follow focus, this feature enables more precise control over focus adjustments.

Focus Hold Button:

How to Use the Focus Hold Button

To save focus at any desired position, press and hold the “focus hold button” for 3 seconds. The screen will blink to indicate the saving status. Afterward, you can switch focus between two saved positions simply by pressing the button briefly.

Zoom Lock Switch

The zoom lock switch ensures the lens remains in its shortest 35mm position, making it easier and safer to carry.

Easily Become a Professional Videographer

  1. Dolly Shot: In MODE 3 (MF), you can effortlessly create a “Dolly Shot,” a special effect commonly seen in movies. Unlike professional dolly systems that require simultaneous operation of the focus and zoom rings, this lens links the focus and zoom rings, allowing you to take dolly shots with just the zoom ring.

  2. Digital Par-Focal: Once the subject is in focus in MF mode, the focus remains locked, even when zooming in or out. This eliminates the need for readjustment and allows for more accurate and stable shots.

What is a Dolly Shot?

A dolly shot, also called a tracking or trucking shot, is a technique used by cinematographers to follow a subject in motion. The camera is mounted on a dolly, which facilitates smooth movement in front of, behind, or alongside the subject. This technique enhances the emotional connection between the subject and the viewer by adding audiovisual and dramatic effects.

How to Take a Dolly Shot Simply by Handheld

  • If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake. To avoid this, shoot at a focal length between 35mm and 100mm.
  • Stand 1.5 to 2 meters away from the subject.
  • Set the custom switch to MF and Mode 3, then adjust the focal length to about 100mm.
  • Focus on the subject and set the aperture to F8~16.
  • Slowly rotate the zoom ring toward the wide-angle end while moving your body and arms toward the subject.
  • The dolly shot is now complete.
  • Tip: If shooting from a greater distance, use a cart or gimbal for added stability.

Premium Design and Usability

The Samyang 2nd Generation lenses introduce a ‘Hidden Red Ring’ design that has become an iconic part of the brand’s identity. This design improves both the look and usability of the lens, incorporating feedback from customers to enhance tactile controls for focusing and precise focal length adjustment. Additionally, a lock switch on the body helps users secure the lens at its shortest 35mm position, offering protection during travel.

Weather-Sealed Design

Considering the user’s shooting environment, the lens is fully weather-sealed at the mount and throughout the body. Weather sealing is applied in 11 areas, preventing damage from dust, light rain, and snow.
