Black Pro-Mist Filter

The Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Filter is a staple tool for cinematographers working in the digital world. It delivers all the benefits of the original Pro-Mist filter in a more subtle and delicate form. Over the past 30 years, it has built a strong reputation for its unique approach to contrast layering and gauzy, paint-like halation.

Subtle and Controlled Diffusion

The Black Pro-Mist reduces highlights and lowers contrast, but with less lightening of shadows than the standard Pro-Mist. As a result, you get a more delicate effect that creates a soft, pastel quality of light. Highlight flares stay controlled, and the filter softens wrinkles and blemishes without washing out the image.

Even at its lowest density, the filter adds a pleasing depth of warmth through an effective increase in halation. Importantly, this warmth does not carry over to skin tone values, keeping your subjects looking natural. In addition, these characteristics become more apparent from 1/4 density and above, giving you a noticeable but tasteful look.

Scales with Density

At heavier densities, the spill from practical lights becomes more aggressive and the warm tone grows more apparent. Yet the filter continues to deliver its signature subtle and effective look at every level. So whether you choose a lighter density for a barely-there effect or a heavier one for a more pronounced cinematic result, the Black Pro-Mist stays true to its character.

ColorCore Technology

This filter is built using Tiffen’s ColorCore technology, which laminates the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinds it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. Furthermore, it is also available in the DV Select Kit 3 and DV Film Look Kit for added convenience.
