Five aspherical elements, including three XA elements, help deliver detailed rendering across the entire 16-35mm zoom range, even at the maximum F2.8 aperture. The advanced optical design controls aberrations while maintaining excellent resolution across the image edges.

The large F2.8 aperture and advanced 11-blade aperture unit produce smooth, circular bokeh. This adds depth and expressive impact to wide-angle images while maintaining the lens’s high level of detail.

Close Focus And Clear Wide-Angle Images

The lens focuses as close as 0.22 m throughout the zoom range and offers a maximum magnification of 0.32x. This lets you move close to subjects for dynamic wide-angle perspectives while using deep bokeh for added creative control.

Nano AR Coating II helps reduce flare and ghosting caused by strong light sources in the frame. The optical design also suppresses internal reflections that can reduce image clarity.

A floating focus mechanism with four XD Linear Motors and precise lens control delivers fast, smooth, quiet, and accurate autofocus. Compatible α-series bodies can track fast-moving subjects, while the α1 supports high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30 fps.

The lens design helps reduce focus breathing, focus shift, and axis shift during zooming. It also minimises image movement and angle-of-view changes for smoother movie footage. The XD Linear Motors and advanced aperture unit help reduce noise and vibration during recording.

Linear Response MF provides direct and precise manual focus control. The focus ring responds linearly to rotation, making manual focus adjustments feel immediate for both stills and movies.

Compact Design For Handheld And Gimbal Use

At just 547 g and 111.5 mm long, the lens offers a lightweight, compact design. Its center of gravity changes very little during zooming, which supports stable handheld operation and reduces the need for gimbal readjustment after changing the focal length.

The lens includes an aperture ring with click ON/OFF control and an iris lock switch. The click stops can provide tactile feedback for stills or smooth, silent aperture control for movies. Two customisable focus hold buttons provide easy access in horizontal and vertical shooting positions.

Improved dust- and moisture-resistant construction uses structural sealing, silicone rubber gaskets around the buttons and switches, and a rubber ring around the lens mount. A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel water, oil, and other contaminants. The supplied compact lens hood blocks unwanted light while taking up less space in use and storage.
