The Sony SEL40F25G FE 40mm F2.5 G lens combines high image quality, natural bokeh, fast autofocus and a compact design. Its 40mm focal length suits portraits, street photography, everyday snapshots and views around town. The lens weighs only 173 g (6.2 oz), making it easy to carry and well suited to handheld shooting, gimbal work and movie production.

Three aspherical elements deliver high resolution from corner to corner, including at the widest aperture with a shallow depth of field. The 7-blade circular aperture and controlled spherical aberration create beautiful, natural bokeh. The aluminium finish on the lens body and hood adds a premium feel, while the compact design supports comfortable everyday use.

Fast AF and Precise Focus

Two linear motors provide fast, precise and quiet autofocus with strong tracking performance. This helps capture decisive moments, changing facial expressions and moving subjects in both still photography and video. Internal focusing keeps the lens length constant during focusing, making it comfortable to use with a gimbal or grip.

The lens focuses as close as 28 cm (0.92 ft) in AF mode and 25 cm (0.82 ft) in MF mode. This close-up performance suits flowers, small objects and other subjects where a blurred background helps draw attention to the main subject. Linear Response MF provides a direct, natural response to focus ring movements for precise manual focus control.

Designed for Creative Control

The aperture ring gives direct control for both stills and video. Switchable click stops provide tactile feedback for photography or smooth, quiet aperture adjustments for movie shooting. The focus mode switch enables quick AF/MF changes, while the customisable focus hold button can be assigned to functions such as Eye AF.

The lens uses a 49 mm filter diameter, and the threaded hood also accepts the same cap and filter for added convenience. Internal focusing keeps the front element from rotating, allowing the use of circular polarising and ND filters. Its metal construction and dust- and moisture-resistant design provide added reliability for outdoor shooting.

The SEL40F25G also forms part of a matching set of compact G Lens primes. The lenses share a similar external design, 49 mm filter diameter, compact size and layout. Their similar weight also helps simplify gimbal rebalancing. On APS-C camera bodies, the lens provides a 60 mm equivalent focal length in the 35 mm full-frame format, making it suitable for a broad range of scenes and portraits.
