The Sony SEL400F28GM FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS Lens combines a large F2.8 aperture with advanced G Master optical performance. It delivers high resolution, smooth bokeh, fast autofocus, and professional control. Its lightweight design also gives active photographers greater freedom when shooting handheld or on a monopod.

Two newly developed XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors provide fast, precise, and quiet autofocus. Sony designed these motors to deliver higher thrust and efficiency for modern and future camera bodies. The lens can achieve up to a 5x improvement in moving-subject tracking performance. New control algorithms improve response, reduce lag, and support quiet, low-vibration operation when driving the large-aperture focus group.

High Resolution and Smooth Bokeh

Three fluorite elements help control axial and lateral chromatic aberration, while also reducing colour bleeding. The result is clear reproduction of fine subject details with strong contrast across the image area. Sony also individually tests and adjusts each lens during manufacture to achieve high-quality bokeh. An 11-blade circular aperture helps create smooth, rounded defocused areas.

Sony Nano AR Coating reduces reflections on internal lens surfaces to help suppress flare and ghosting. This improves image clarity and contrast. The lens also supports optional 1.4x and 2.0x tele-converters, extending the focal length up to 800mm with an F5.6 maximum aperture while maintaining high imaging performance and fast, precise autofocus.

Professional Control and Field Reliability

At just 2,895 grams, the SEL400F28GM offers remarkably low weight for a 400mm F2.8 super telephoto lens. Its optical design uses three fluorite elements and reduces the number of elements at the front of the lens barrel. Magnesium alloy components further reduce weight while providing durability. The balanced design reduces rotational resistance by approximately 50% compared with the SAL500F40G, supporting quicker and more precise panning.

The lens features built-in optical image stabilization with Mode 2 for panning and Mode 3 for tracking unpredictable sports action. When paired with an α camera body that includes in-body image stabilization, 5-axis image stabilization becomes available. Full-time DMF lets you immediately engage manual focus by rotating the focus ring, even during AF-C shooting.

Four customizable focus hold buttons provide easy access around the lens barrel. The function ring supports PRESET and FUNCTION settings, including Power Focus and APS-C/Full Frame angle-of-view switching. Preset Focus lets you store a focus point and recall it instantly by rotating the function ring. The lens also includes a focus range limiter with FULL, 7m–2.7m, and ∞–7m settings.

A 40.5mm drop-in filter slot supports ND and other filters, while the optional VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer can be rotated while installed. The high-durability tripod collar uses bearings for smooth rotation and offers 90-degree click stops that can be engaged or disengaged. Dust- and moisture-resistant construction, a fluorine-coated front element, reinforced mount attachment, and magnesium alloy components support reliable professional use in demanding outdoor conditions. A carbon fiber lens hood and dedicated trunk-style hard case are supplied.
