G Master Resolution And Bokeh

Two aspherical elements, including one XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision, help control distance-related aberration across the full 70-200mm zoom range. The lens maintains outstanding resolution throughout the image area at all focusing distances.

Two ED spherical elements, two Super ED spherical elements, and an ED aspherical element help reduce chromatic and spherical aberration. This produces sharp images with reduced colour bleeding. The XA element also helps suppress onion-ring bokeh, while precise spherical aberration control creates smooth, natural background blur.

A newly developed 11-blade aperture remains almost perfectly circular from wide open to two stops down, helping produce the natural circular bokeh associated with G Master lenses.

Fast AF And Refined Movie Performance

Four high-thrust XD Linear Motors and advanced control technology deliver fast, precise autofocus for moving subjects. The lens offers up to 4×2 faster AF than the SEL70200GM, while focus tracking during zooming improves by approximately 30% compared to the previous model.

The lens design reduces focus breathing, focus shift during zooming, and axis shift during zooming. XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture drive unit also support quiet operation with reduced noise and vibration during movie recording.

Independent focus, zoom, and iris rings provide precise manual control for movie work. The aperture click switch can provide tactile feedback for stills or smooth, silent iris control for movies. Linear Response MF delivers direct, precise manual focus control, while Full-time DMF allows quick manual focus correction even in AF-C mode.

Professional Telephoto Control

The lens focuses as close as 0.4 m at 70 mm and 0.82 m at 200 mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.3x. Floating focus helps maintain pinpoint sharpness at close distances, while inner focusing supports close-up shooting.

Built-in optical image stabilisation helps produce sharp handheld images. MODE 2 supports panning, while MODE 3 emphasises framing stability for dynamic and unpredictable movement. 5-axis image stabilisation becomes available when the lens is used with an α body that includes in-body image stabilisation.

Optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters extend the focal length to 400 mm, or 600 mm on an APS-C body. Maximum apertures with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters are F4 and F5.6, respectively.

Lightweight, Durable And Ready For Production

At just 1,045 g, this lens offers a lightweight 70-200mm F2.8 design. Magnesium alloy barrel components and an improved design support better balance and handling. A focus-range limiter helps speed up autofocus by restricting operation to FULL or ∞–3 m.

Three customisable focus hold buttons sit 90° apart for easy access in horizontal, vertical, and angled shooting positions. An iris lock switch helps prevent unwanted exposure changes. The aperture can be locked at the A position or set manually from F2.8 to F22.

Improved dust- and moisture-resistant construction uses sealed seams, silicone rubber gaskets around buttons and switches, and a rubber ring around the lens mount. The internal zoom mechanism also helps resist dust and moisture while keeping the lens barrel at a constant length.

The supplied lens hood features an opening for convenient circular polarising and variable ND filter operation. Its flocked interior helps reduce unwanted reflections, while the silicone rubber front edge improves usability. A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel water, oil, and other contaminants.

A removable tripod mount makes it easy to switch between tripod and handheld shooting. The mount includes a lock mechanism to help prevent accidental removal.
