Variable Neutral Density Filter – Fits in most 4×5.65 matte boxes

The Brilliant² 4×5.65/138mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is 12mm thick and is designed to fit in most 4×5.65″ matte boxes that have at least two undivided slots (stages). In addition, ND values between ND 0.6 (2 Stops) and ND 2.4 (8 Stops) are provided, therefore offering versatile control over exposure.

No Accidental Polarization or Cross Polarization: The filter is constructed with two 138mm circular polarizers, one of which is rotated while the other is kept fixed. The circular polarizers are oriented with their quarter-wave retarders facing outward, which effectively de-polarizes both sides. As a result, accidental polarization effects are prevented in the scene, and the Variable ND can be inserted in either orientation, eliminating the risk of cross polarization in the camera.

Water White Optical Glass with Multi-Coating: The Brilliant-Pol Polarizing Filters used in the Variable ND filters are made from Schott B270 “water white” optical glass. Furthermore, they are coated with a multi-layer anti-reflection coating, which significantly reduces flare, stray light, and ghost images caused by filter-to-filter reflections. Consequently, contrast and color saturation are enhanced. These filters are carefully ground and polished to ensure a flat surface, and distortions or focus shifts are prevented, even with long focal-length lenses.

Large Diameter Clear Aperture: Thanks to the large 138mm diameter polarizers, a 5.1″ clear aperture is provided, making it ideal for use with wide-angle lenses and large zoom lenses. In turn, this feature ensures high-quality results, even in challenging scenarios.

Quick and Sure No-Slip Rotation: The density change is easily adjusted by spinning either of the two thumb wheels by hand or by using a motor mounted on the 1/4–20 thread in the handle. Additionally, an all-aluminum main gear is incorporated in the design, on which the 138mm Brilliant Pol Circular Polarizer filter is mounted. This gear is supported by internal Delrin™ rollers, ensuring smooth, no-slip rotation. Moreover, the main gear is driven by aluminum thumb wheels, geared with standard 0.8-pitch teeth, which can be used with motorized wireless remote systems.

Efficient Use with Rota-Pol Polarizer: When used behind the Rota-Pol, the Variable ND filter is able to work beautifully, allowing both polarization and neutral density to be controlled by motors and wireless FIZ systems. However, it is important to note that the Rota-Pol must be placed in front of the Variable Neutral Density filter (world side) for the system to function effectively.
