The Sony α9 III introduces the world’s first full-frame image sensor with a global shutter system. Unlike rolling shutter sensors, the Exmor RS sensor exposes and reads all pixels simultaneously, capturing fast-moving subjects with absolutely no image distortion. The 24.6MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor enables blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 120fps with full AF/AE tracking, a maximum shutter speed of 1/80000 sec., and full flash sync at all shutter speeds with compatible Sony flashes. The BIONZ XR engine delivers up to 8x more processing power than its predecessors.

Advanced Autofocus & Subject Recognition

The AI processing unit uses subject form data and human pose estimation to detect body and head positions precisely — even when subjects face away or have covered faces. It recognises Humans, Animals, Birds, Insects, Cars/Trains and Airplanes, including helmets on Formula race car drivers. AF/AE tracking runs at up to 120 calculations per second. Pre-Capture records moments from 0.005 to 1 second before shutter release in any file format up to 120fps.

Professional Video & Stabilisation

The α9 III records 4K 120p without cropping for the first time in the α lineup, using the full angle of view from any lens. 4K 60p with full pixel readout and 6K oversampling reduces moiré and jaggies dramatically. S-Cinetone delivers the same colour science as Sony’s Cinema Line with natural mid-tones and gorgeous highlights. Dynamic Active Mode improves stabilisation by more than 30% over Active Mode, while focus breathing compensation maintains a consistent angle of view. The 8.0-stop 5-axis optical image stabilisation system uses advanced gyro sensors and optimised algorithms.

Build, Display & Connectivity

The 9.44M-dot OLED viewfinder provides 0.90x magnification with a 240fps refresh rate for minimal motion blur. The 4-axis multi-angle 3.2″ touch LCD (2.1M dots) adjusts up 98°, down 40°, side 180° and rotates 270°. Dual CFexpress Type A slots also support UHS-I/II SD cards. Built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac) with 2×2 MIMO transfers data up to 2x faster than its predecessor. A LAN terminal, USB-C 10Gbps and HDMI Type-A complete the connectivity. A built-in voice memo microphone sits on the rear panel. The lightweight magnesium alloy body offers exceptional dust and moisture resistance. The optional VG-C5 Vertical Grip houses two NP-FZ100 batteries for extended shooting.
