Introducing the world’s first full-frame image sensor with a global shutter system, the α9 III is a game changer. It captures fast-moving subjects with absolutely no image distortion, preserving split-second moments in stunning detail. Unlike a rolling shutter sensor, which records images sequentially from the top to the bottom row of pixels, the newly developed Exmor RS image sensor exposes and reads all pixels simultaneously. Unparalleled Speed and Precision

The α9 III boasts a 24.6MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with global shutter, enabling blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 120 fps with full AF/AE tracking. With a maximum shutter speed of 1/80000 second (1/16000 second during continuous shooting), combined with a compatible Sony flash unit, full flash synchronization is possible at all shutter speeds, eliminating the steep, nonlinear drop-off in illumination common with high-speed sync. The BIONZ XR image processing engine delivers up to eight times more processing power than its predecessors, processing the large volume of data from the new Exmor RS sensor in real time – even during 120 fps bursts.

Advanced Autofocus and Subject Recognition

The α9 III’s innovative AI processing unit uses subject form data to accurately recognize movement. Human pose estimation technology detects body and head positions with high precision, locking onto a subject even when facing away from the camera or with a covered face. The camera supports enhanced recognition of Humans, Animals, Birds, Insects, Cars/Trains, and Airplanes – including helmets worn by Formula race car drivers. With up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second, the camera tracks complex subject motions and predicts sudden movements with greater precision. Pre-Capture records moments from 0.005 to 1 second before the shutter release, available in any file format up to 120 fps with full AF/AE tracking.

Professional Image Quality and Stabilization

Composite RAW Shooting captures multiple images (4, 8, 16, or 32) and merges them using Sony’s Imaging Edge Desktop software to create full-resolution images with very low noise. The α9 III is equipped with a high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyro sensors, and optimized algorithms offering 8.0-stop stabilization. The 4-axis multi-angle monitor combines the flexibility of a conventional tilting monitor with side-opening vari-angle versatility, adjustable up 98°, down 40°, side 180°, rotation 270°. The 9.44-million-dot OLED viewfinder provides 0.90x magnification with a 240 fps refresh rate for an extremely smooth image with minimal motion blur.

Professional Video Capabilities

For the first time in the α lineup, the α9 III offers 4K (3840 x 2160) 120p movie recording without cropping, allowing users to utilize the full angle of view from any lens. The camera records 4K at up to 120p, and at 60p with full pixel readout and 6K oversampling to dramatically reduce moiré and jaggies. Sony’s S-Cinetone picture profile delivers the same color science as the Cinema Line, providing natural mid-tones, soft colors, and gorgeous highlights. Dynamic Active Mode improves stabilization by more than 30% over the existing Active Mode, while focus breathing compensation maintains a consistent angle of view.

Built for Professional Workflows

The α9 III features two CFexpress Type A compatible media slots (also supporting UHS-I/II SD cards), built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac) with 2×2 MIMO support for high-speed data transfer up to twice as fast as its predecessor, and a LAN terminal for wired connectivity. A dedicated voice memo microphone built into the camera’s rear panel allows for clearer voice memo recording. The optional VG-C5 Vertical Grip houses two NP-FZ100 batteries for extended shooting. Constructed with lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy and exceptional dust and moisture resistance, the α9 III is built to withstand challenging professional environments.
