The 20-70mm zoom range covers ultra-wide views through short telephoto perspectives in one compact full-frame lens. The 20mm wide end helps maintain a broad angle of view when shooting 16:9 or 2.35:1 movies. Its versatile range suits a wide variety of still and movie subjects.

High-Quality G Lens Optics

The advanced optical design uses two AA elements, one aspherical element, three ED glass elements, and one ED aspherical element. This combination corrects chromatic and spherical aberrations to deliver high optical performance across the zoom range, including toward the image edges.

Flexible F4 Performance

The constant F4 maximum aperture remains available across the entire zoom range. This gives you consistent exposure control at every focal length and avoids extreme ISO settings at the telephoto end. The lens also delivers strong close-up performance, with a minimum focus distance of 0.3m at the wide end and 0.25m at the telephoto end with AF. Manual focus provides a 0.25m minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range, with up to 0.39x magnification.

Fast, Quiet Autofocus

Two XD Linear Motors drive fast, quiet, and smooth focusing. The system provides up to 60% higher AF speed and up to two times better tracking performance. It supports reliable subject tracking during continuous still shooting at up to 30 fps and smooth high-frame-rate movie capture.

Designed for Stills and Movies

The lens reduces focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming to help minimise distracting image changes. Its XD Linear Motors and newly developed aperture unit also reduce noise and vibration during movie recording. Compatible α series bodies can use breathing compensation. Active Mode image stabilisation works effectively at the 20mm end to support smooth handheld footage while preserving a wide angle of view.

An independent aperture ring provides direct control, while the click ON/OFF switch enables smooth, seamless aperture operation. Two customisable focus hold buttons provide convenient access, and the focus mode switch allows quick changes between autofocus and manual focus. The dust- and moisture-resistant design adds reliability for outdoor shooting, while the fluorine-coated front element helps repel fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants and makes cleaning easier.
