5K Full-Frame Stacked Exmor RS Sensor

The full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor enables fast readout for high-resolution, high-frame-rate recording. Wide latitude and low noise ensure smooth gradation and natural textures even in high-contrast scenes. The FX5 offers 15+ stop latitude with three Base ISO settings — ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800 — so you get clean shadows and wide latitude across varied lighting conditions. In addition, Dual Gain Shooting maximises latitude while reducing noise, delivering smooth and natural gradients for greater editing flexibility.

BIONZ XR2 with Integrated AI Processing

The BIONZ XR2 engine brings dramatic improvements across image, sound, communication, and operation. Its integrated AI processing supports advanced subject recognition and deep-learning-based illumination estimation for more accurate Auto Tracing White Balance and dependable shooting support in demanding conditions. Real-time Eye AF accurately recognises human, animal, and bird eyes, while Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 points for confident focusing even in darker scenes. Real-time Tracking keeps the camera with the subject smoothly and precisely, even at shallow depth of field.

Open Gate Recording and High Frame Rates

The FX5 is the first camera in the Cinema Line FX series to offer full-frame Open Gate recording. It supports 5K up to 120fps in FF 3:2 format and 4K up to 240fps in FF crop, giving you the freedom to adjust framing, speed, and workflow for even the most ambitious productions. Furthermore, internal X-OCN compressed RAW recording in LT, C1, and C2 codecs eliminates the need for an external RAW recorder, letting you balance image quality, file size, and workflow flexibility on set.

Cinematic Color Science

S-Cinetone brings Sony cinema color science to the FX5, delivering natural skin tones, smooth gradation, and a polished cinematic look straight out of camera. S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine retain broad color information beyond BT.2020 and DCI-P3 for precise grading and easier color matching with VENICE 2 in multi-camera shoots. Three S-Log3 modes — Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO — support everything from cinematic shoots to run-and-gun production. You can also import up to 16 user LUTs for on-set monitoring.

Stabilisation, Anamorphic, and White Balance

The FX5 features 5-axis in-body optical stabilisation with an enhanced unit that expands roll-direction compensation by up to 2x. Dynamic Active Mode adds extra electronic support, and stabilisation metadata can be used in post-production for even more precise results. Built-in de-squeeze supports 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x settings for a wide range of anamorphic lenses. Deep-learning-based illumination estimation delivers accurate Auto Tracing White Balance even under challenging lighting conditions that previously caused color cast.

Audio and Monitoring

The XLR Handle Unit supports two XLR/TRS inputs, a 3.5mm stereo mini jack, and up to 96kHz/32-bit float audio recording across up to four channels. Independent 32-bit float WAV recording alongside video audio gives you maximum flexibility for on-set sound workflows. The 3.5-type monitor tilts 98° up, 40° down, and 180° sideways with up to 270° rotation when open. Exposure and focus tools including Waveform Monitor, Histogram, False Color, and Focus Map support faster on-set judgments. The optional OLED viewfinder DVF-EL1 adds a 3.5-type panel with approximately 7.07 million dots, DCI-P3 color gamut, 10-bit display, and 0°–90° tilting design.

Controls, Power, and Connectivity

The BIG6 home screen brings six essential settings together on one clear screen for fast on-set operation. A high-capacity 2670mAh NP-SA100 battery provides up to 170 minutes of recording. Dual CFexpress Type A/SDXC slots support relay, simultaneous, and separated recording. HDMI Type A output, dual USB Type-C ports, high-speed wired LAN with 2.5GBASE-T support, and built-in Wi-Fi 802.11ax with 2×2 MIMO on 6/5/2.4GHz bands provide comprehensive connectivity for remote control, file transfer, and networked production workflows. The Monitor and Control app turns a smartphone, tablet, or Mac into a flexible second screen for monitoring and camera operation.
