Overview
Gain control of expressive freedom
With outstanding imaging capability and high-speed performance packed into a compact body, the α7 III empowers you to capture once-in-a-lifetime moments with precision, power, and flexibility.
Image quality evolves:
Rendering scenes in realistic detail
The α7 III incorporates a newly developed back-illuminated image sensor and an evolved image processing system. Together, they fulfill a variety of shooting needs, offering the high-quality imaging capabilities you expect from a full-frame camera.
Back-illuminated full-frame sensor
The camera’s 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor enhances light collection efficiency, expands circuitry scale, and, with the copper wiring layer, accelerates data transfer. As a result, the sensor minimizes noise and reveals fine details in every image.
Reducing noise in high-resolution images
The α7 III’s ISO range extends to ISO 100-51200 (expandable to ISO 50-204800 for stills). Detail Reproduction and Area-specific Noise Reduction technologies work together to preserve image detail while cutting noise. As a result, you can shoot at high ISO without worrying about noise or deterioration in image quality.
Subtle gradation from shadow to highlight
Thanks to its revamped CMOS sensor and image processor, the α7 III provides a dynamic range of approximately 15 stops at low-sensitivity settings. This creates smooth gradation from shadows to highlights, offering greater creative freedom in your shots.
Steadier shots with 5-axis stabilisation
The latest high-precision stabilisation system uses stabilisation units, gyro sensors, and algorithms to achieve a 5.0-step shutter speed advantage. It compensates for five types of camera shake and works with a wide range of lenses, delivering excellent performance.
14-bit RAW output for rich gradation
The BIONZ X image processor and front-end LSI process image signals in 16-bit form, providing smoother, more natural gradation. Moreover, the α7 III allows 14-bit RAW data output, even when shooting in silent or continuous modes.
Take aim with high AF performance: 4D FOCUS
The α7 III uses advanced AF technology derived from the α9, optimizing it for capturing fast-moving subjects like dancers, boxers, and wildlife. Once it locks onto a subject, it won’t easily let go.
Reliable AF down to EV-34 brightness
With advanced AF algorithms, the α7 III achieves high AF precision even in extremely low light, down to EV-34, ensuring reliable autofocus in dark environments.
Focal-plane phase-detection AF supports A-mount lenses
The 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system covers a wide area and responds instantly. This system also supports high tracking performance, even when using A-mount lenses via the LA-EA3 mount adapter.
Catch the eyes to see into the soul:
Eye AF revolutionises portraiture
With the α7 III, Eye AF now works in AF-C mode, delivering fast and effective eye detection and tracking when shooting stills. This ensures you can maintain optimal focus on moving subjects, transforming portrait photography.
Focus control via touch screen
The α7 III offers Touch Focus and Touch Pad functions, allowing you to adjust the focus with your fingertip while using the viewfinder, making the process intuitive.
AF in Focus Magnifier
Use autofocus for stills while magnifying the focus area in the viewfinder or monitor. You can also magnify the view after autofocusing, perfect for precision-focus photography.
More versatile AF settings all around
You can adjust AF tracking sensitivity in five steps and change AF areas or points when switching between horizontal and vertical orientations. Furthermore, you can assign focus point settings to custom buttons for added convenience.
Capture decisive moments:
Fast continuous shooting
The α7 III shoots continuous bursts at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking and up to 8 fps in live-view mode. Additionally, it supports silent shooting at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking at maximum resolution.
Confidence-boosting continuous shooting
Capture split-second action with continuous shooting at 10 fps—or 8 fps in live-view mode—while maintaining AF/AE tracking. You can capture up to 177 JPEG (standard) images, 89 compressed RAW images, or 40 uncompressed RAW images in a single burst.
Shoot continuously in absolute silence
Silent shooting at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking ensures you can capture moments without any noise. This is crucial in scenarios where even a slight sound could ruin an ideal shot.
Anti-flicker shooting
The α7 III detects artificial lighting flicker and times the shutter to minimize potential exposure and color inconsistencies when shooting at high shutter speeds or in continuous bursts.
Better operation during continuous shooting
While shooting continuously, you can review, delete, or protect groups of shots quickly. Additionally, you can access a menu to adjust settings and operate image playback during data writing.
More realistic, expressive movies:
High-resolution 4K HDR
The α7 III now supports 4K movie recording with 2.4-times higher oversampling. It also features a new Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) picture profile, which supports instant HDR workflows for stunning video quality.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) for instant HDR workflow
The new HLG profile supports an instant HDR workflow. Movies recorded in this mode appear true-to-life, minimizing black crush and blown highlights that can degrade gradation and details, without the need for post-production color grading.
Supports S-Log3 and Slow and Quick Motion
S-Log3 enhances gradation from shadows to mid-tones and widens dynamic range up to 14 stops. You can also select frame rates from 1 to 120/100 fps for slow-motion or fast-motion effects, allowing for up to 60x quick motion and 5x slow motion.
Advantages of Sony’s lenses for video shooting
The combination of Sony’s lenses and cameras enhances your video creation experience by offering unique advantages for video shooting with the α7 III.
Shoot with more assured reliability:
Reliable features and operation in a compact body
The α7 III’s operability is enhanced by fast control during shooting, stunningly clear views through the Tru-Finder, versatile connectivity, extended shooting endurance, and resistance to wet and dusty conditions, ensuring reliable performance in any environment.
Longer battery life to shoot for more professional lengths
The α7 III uses the NP-FZ100 battery, which offers approximately 2.2 times the capacity of the NP-FW50 battery. This allows you to shoot up to 710 photos on a single charge. Additionally, the BC-QZ1 optional battery charger charges faster than USB charging.
Dual media slots, UHS-II support
The α7 III features two media slots, one of which is UHS-II-compatible for fast data writing. You can record or relay data simultaneously, separate RAW/JPEG data, and copy data between cards for greater flexibility.
My Menu: Faster access to your favorites
You can register up to 30 frequently used items in the new My Menu for quick access. This customization lets you tailor the camera’s menu to suit your specific preferences.
Rating function
The α7 III allows you to rate recorded still images from 1 to 5 stars directly on the spot, using the playback screen. You can also assign this function to a custom button for added convenience.
High connectivity for smooth workflow
The USB 3.1 Gen 1-compatible Type-C™ port enables fast PC Remote data transfer, making it easier to handle large image files produced during PC-tethered shooting.
Imaging Edge™ Remote, Viewer, and Edit
Take your photography to the next level with Imaging Edge desktop applications. “Remote” lets you control and monitor live shooting on your PC screen, while “Viewer” allows you to preview, rate, and select photos from large libraries. Use “Edit” to develop RAW data into high-quality photos and manage your production more efficiently.
