61MP Full-Frame Resolution

The Sony a7R IV uses a newly developed 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor with 61.0 megapixels. Its mirrorless design avoids mechanical mirror shock, helping the camera maximize resolution without negatively affecting image quality. Sony’s technology delivers high resolution with low noise and high sensitivity, especially across the low- to mid-sensitivity range.

Advanced Processing and Stabilization

The enhanced BIONZ X image processing engine works with the high-resolution sensor to reproduce detail and reduce noise. Standard ISO sensitivity reaches ISO 32000, while a wide 15-stop dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity for stills provides smooth shadow-to-highlight gradation. The camera also uses 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization with optimized algorithms for up to a 5.5-stop shutter speed advantage.

An electronic shutter enables silent, vibration-free shooting. An internal damper structure absorbs shutter movement to minimize vibration and support sharp, highly resolved images. The camera also provides compressed and uncompressed 14-bit RAW output for smooth and natural gradations.

High-Precision Viewfinder and AF

The 5.76-million-dot UXGA OLED Tru-Finder provides high-precision, high-brightness, and high-contrast viewing. Its resolution is 1.6 times higher than the α7R III. High Display Quality mode uses the approximately 61.0MP sensor to reduce moire and jaggies, while the 120/100fps High finder frame rate mode delivers smoother motion. Fluorine coating also makes dirt and fingerprints easier to remove.

The Fast Hybrid AF system combines phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus. It features 567 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection points, covering 99.7% of image height and 74.0% of image width. The system can focus in conditions as dim as EV-3 and maintains fast response despite the high-resolution sensor’s large data load.

Fast Burst and Real-Time Tracking

The α7R IV can shoot up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking through its mechanical shutter and up to 8fps in live-view mode. Its 1.5x greater buffer memory, system speed, and UHS-II support allow continuous bursts of up to approximately 68 images. APS-C shooting mode produces 26.2MP images and provides more cropping flexibility for distant subjects.

Real-time Tracking uses color, pattern, subject distance, and AI-based face and eye information to maintain focus on selected subjects. Real-time Eye AF supports human eyes during still and movie shooting and lets you select the left or right eye. Real-time Eye AF for Animals detects and tracks animal eyes for wildlife and pet photography.

Professional Connectivity and Media

The camera uses the large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery and features an energy-efficient circuit design. Optional accessories can extend shooting time, including the VG-C4EM Vertical Grip for two batteries and the NPA-MQZ1K Multi Battery Adapter Kit for up to four batteries. USB Type-C™ and Multi/Micro USB ports also support power from external mobile batteries.

Two SD media slots support both UHS-I and UHS-II. You can record simultaneously or relay data, separate RAW and JPEG files, separate stills and movies, or copy data between cards. The camera also supports wireless PC Remote over selectable 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi and wired PC Remote through its USB 3.2 Gen 1 compatible USB Type-C™ port.

Pixel Shift and Flash Versatility

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting can combine 16 pixel-shifted images into one approximately 240.8-million-pixel image measuring 19,008 x 12,672. The system shifts the sensor in half-pixel and one-pixel increments to capture highly detailed architecture and art images with minimal moire and color artifacts.

The sync terminal supports non-dedicated flash units and cables with standard sync terminals. The camera supports wireless off-camera flash, slow sync, and rear curtain sync. Continuous flash shooting can reach up to 10fps.
