The Sony FE 600mm F4 GM OSS combines fast autofocus, stunning G Master resolution, and beautiful bokeh in a lightweight, well-balanced design. Sony’s XA and XD linear motor technologies deliver high optical and mechanical performance for dynamic sports, news, and nature photography. A large XA element and three fluorite elements help suppress chromatic aberration and maintain high contrast and stunning detail across the image area. Individual lens calibration controls spherical aberration to balance high resolution with beautiful G Master bokeh, while the 11-blade circular aperture adds to the smooth background rendering.

Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors provide fast, precise autofocus and reliable tracking of fast-moving sports and wildlife subjects. A control algorithm supports fast, quiet positioning of the large focus group with minimal delay and vibration. Optional 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters provide extra reach. The 2.0x teleconverter extends the focal length to 1200mm, or 1800mm on an APS-C body, with an F8 maximum aperture while maintaining outstanding optical quality and AF speed and precision.

Lightweight Design and Stabilised Shooting

The lens weighs 3,040g and uses a well-balanced design inherited from the SEL400F28GM. This makes it easier to take advantage of its optical performance when shooting handheld or on a monopod. With a compact, lightweight E-mount body, the centre of gravity supports smooth and precise panning. Rigid magnesium alloy components in the lens barrel exterior, tripod mount, and critical internal areas provide durability while helping reduce weight. The reinforced mount uses more attachment screws and other refinements to provide the rigidity and reliability required for professional use.

3-mode Optical SteadyShot supports sharp handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths. MODE 2 suits panning, while MODE 3 enhances viewfinder stabilisation for easier framing of dynamic sports and wildlife action. Compatible α bodies also provide 5-axis stabilisation. The lightweight carbon fibre lens hood uses a flocked interior to block unwanted light, while the fluorine-coated front element repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes fingerprints easier to remove. Nano AR Coating, critical-surface flocking, and other optical refinements reduce internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for crisp, clear images in difficult light.

Advanced Focus and Function Control

Full-time DMF automatically engages manual focus when the focus ring is operated with the FULL TIME DMF switch ON, even in AF-C mode. This allows focus correction when autofocus selects the wrong subject or enables fine adjustment after initial autofocus. Linear Response MF provides direct, linear manual focus control, so focus ring rotation produces an immediate and precise change in focus.

The SET button can memorise a predefined focus point. When PRESET mode is active, rotating the function ring instantly recalls that point for fast sports action. The function works in AF and MF modes and remains unaffected by focus range limiter settings. When the function ring is assigned to APS-C/full-frame switching, rotating it instantly changes the view angle between the two formats, supported by the latest α9 software version. Power Focus enables smooth focus movement in a selected direction, with speed controlled by the degree of ring rotation, making it useful for smooth pull-focus effects during movie recording.

Professional Filter and Focus Range Options

The slide-in filter slot accepts standard 40.5mm ND and other filters, as well as the optional VF-DCPL1 circular polarising filter, which can be rotated for optimum effect while installed. A focus range limiter can restrict autofocus to 4.5-15m, 15m to infinity, or the full range without limitation. Limiting the range can speed up autofocus by preventing the lens from focusing on subjects outside the selected target range.
