Sony BURANO 8K Cinema Camera

The Sony BURANO Digital Cinema Camera combines a full-frame 8.6K sensor, 16 stops of latitude, image stabilization, electronic Variable ND, advanced autofocus, and flexible PL and E-mount compatibility. Its compact 2.9 kg design supports solo and team productions across handheld, shoulder, gimbal, drone, crane, and jib setups.

Full-Frame 8.6K Imaging

The 36 x 24mm full-frame sensor delivers high-quality images with wide latitude and a rich color gamut. It provides a maximum resolution of 8632 x 4856 and uses oversampling to produce 4K content. BURANO supports 16:9 and 17:9 readouts in full-frame 8.6K and Super 35mm 5.8K modes. It also supports 6K 60p, 5.8K 60p, and 4K 120p recording modes for different production needs.

Internal recording supports X-OCN LT, XAVC H, and XAVC-I formats. X-OCN LT records the 8.6K sensor data as a 16-bit scene-linear file while reducing storage requirements and transfer times. XAVC H-I HQ records 10-bit S-Log3 at up to 1200 Mbps, while XAVC H-I SQ records at up to 800 Mbps for 8K 30p image quality.

Flexible Lens And Exposure Control

BURANO features an industry-standard PL lens mount that supports Super 35mm and full-frame PL lenses, including spherical and anamorphic lenses. Cooke/i Technology contacts record lens information as metadata frame by frame. Removing the PL mount adapter allows the use of lever-lock E-mount lenses. The E-mount system also supports BURANO’s advanced stabilization and autofocus capabilities.

The built-in IBIS system supports optical image stabilization with almost any attached lens, including PL lenses. A gyroscopic sensor and control algorithm compensate for camera movement during handheld shooting and while walking. Camera shake data can also transfer to post-production for alignment with CGI and volume stages.

The electronic Variable ND filter continuously changes density from 0.6 (1/4) to 2.1 (1/128). Operators can adjust density using the ND dial and choose continuous or stepped changes. Auto ND can automatically adjust filter density for correct exposure. The electronic ND also allows operators to maintain depth of field while adjusting exposure with the iris.

Advanced Autofocus And Workflow

Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF combines phase detection and contrast AF for fast and accurate subject tracking. Its 627-point phase detection AF system covers approximately 88.7% of the image area. Face Detection recognizes and locks onto human faces, while AI Subject Recognition AF uses an onboard AI processing unit to detect eyes, heads, and torsos.

Human pose estimation helps track subjects when they face away from the camera or wear a mask. Touch operation lets the operator select a person for tracking. The system can maintain focus even when a face becomes difficult to see because of a bowed head or hair.

BURANO provides four new in-camera looks: Warm, Cool, Vintage, and Teal and Orange. It also includes s709 and 709 (800) looks in Cine EI mode. LUT data from a shoot can be embedded into clip metadata to support an efficient color workflow.

Compact And Production Ready

At 2.9 kg including the PL adapter, BURANO is approximately 33% lighter than the VENICE 2. Its compact chassis and ergonomic balance make it suitable for handheld, shoulder-mounted, gimbal, drone, crane, and jib operation. The multipurpose touchscreen LCD monitor, flexible mounting system, and versatile handle allow operators to configure the camera for different shooting styles.

Dual CFexpress Type B slots support relay and simultaneous recording, while CFexpress Type B media supports high data rates including X-OCN LT 8K recording. An additional SD card slot stores proxy files and camera setting information. The magnesium alloy and aluminum housing provides a robust structure, while the isolated cooling system supports extended recording and keeps the sensor protected from dust-sensitive components.
