The Sony FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is Sony’s first α lens to reach an 800mm super-telephoto focal length. It brings distant subjects closer for wildlife, birds, sports, aircraft, and other subjects that remain difficult to approach. The focal range also creates strong telephoto compression for distinctive visual results. Optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters can extend the reach further, with the 2x teleconverter taking the range up to 1600mm.

The internal zoom design keeps the lens length constant while zooming. It also limits center-of-gravity movement for more stable handling. The smooth zoom ring provides quick access to any focal length while helping reduce accidental changes to the selected focal length.

High-Quality Images and Smooth Focus

Six ED glass elements help control chromatic aberration across the super-telephoto range. The lens also suppresses flare and ghosting. An 11-blade circular aperture produces smooth background bokeh and attractive round highlights when shooting with a shallow depth of field.

Two precision linear motors drive the focus group for fast and accurate autofocus. The lens can track subjects even at the 120 fps maximum burst speed of the α9 III and maintains tracking while zooming. A focus-range limiter offers FULL, 10m-NEAR, and ∞-8m settings to suit different subject distances. Focus breathing is also reduced for more refined movie footage and quiet operation.

Full-time DMF allows automatic manual focus engagement when you turn the focus ring. Linear Response MF gives direct manual control, with focus ring movement translating directly into the corresponding focus adjustment.

Built for Field and Movie Work

The lens focuses as close as 1.7m at the wide end of the zoom range and offers up to 0.23x magnification. This adds useful close-up capability to a super-telephoto zoom and expands its range of applications.

Built-in Optical SteadyShot helps make handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths easier. MODE 2 supports panning, while MODE 3 improves viewfinder stabilisation to help frame active subjects. Compatible α bodies can provide enhanced stabilisation through improved body-lens communication and control.

Advanced optical design reduces focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming. This helps maintain smoother image changes during movie recording. Compatible α bodies also support breathing compensation to further reduce unwanted image shifts during focusing.

The tripod mount foot includes 1/4-20 UNC and 3/8-16 UNC screw sockets and rotates quickly for horizontal or vertical shooting. Its durable construction, balanced design, and non-removable build support dependable tripod use in demanding conditions.

Internal zoom and dust and moisture resistant design provide added reliability for outdoor shooting. A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel contaminants and makes cleaning easier. The lens hood features a lock button for secure attachment and removal, plus a filter opening for convenient operation.

Three focus hold buttons sit around the lens barrel at 90-degree intervals. This allows convenient focus hold operation in horizontal and vertical orientations. You can also assign functions other than focus hold to the buttons.

Sony also designed the lens with environmental considerations across development, production, supply chain, and packaging. Plant-based non-woven fabrics are used for product bags as Sony continues its transition toward non-plastic packaging materials.
