a7CR 61MP Full-Frame Camera

The Sony a7CR combines a compact, lightweight body with a 61.0-effective-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS full-frame sensor adapted from the α7R V. Its BIONZ XR image processing engine provides up to eight times more processing power than previous types. It reduces processing latency and improves still and movie processing while supporting natural gradations, realistic color, low noise and responsive menu operation.

The camera offers ISO 100 to ISO 32000 sensitivity for stills and movies. It provides up to 15 stops of dynamic range at lower sensitivities. Its AE algorithm detects skin areas on faces and adjusts exposure in backlit scenes, direct sunlight and when the subject does not face the camera.

Stabilization and Image Control

The 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization system provides 7.0-stop stabilization for handheld shooting. Gyro sensors and optimized algorithms detect and correct camera shake down to the single-pixel level. Pixel Shift Multi Shooting captures multiple pixel-shifted images for PC compositing. A 16-image composite can produce approximately 240.8 million pixels at 19008 x 12672 pixels from data equivalent to approximately 963.2 million pixels.

Creative Look provides 10 presets that you can use directly or edit for different still and movie expressions. Artificial lighting flicker suppression adjusts mechanical-shutter capture timing to reduce flicker. Var. Shutter allows fine shutter-speed control when using the silent electronic shutter under LED lighting.

Lossless RAW compression maintains image quality while improving efficiency for continuous bursts. L, M and S RAW sizes are available. M and S provide 26M and 15M pixels in both full-frame and APS-C modes. JPEG and HEIF images also offer a Light quality setting for smaller file sizes.

AI Recognition and Autofocus

The dedicated AI processing unit improves subject recognition across a wider range of subjects. Pose estimation and skeletal information help recognize human eyes, heads and bodies, including subjects facing away or partly covered by helmets or sunglasses. Animal recognition supports eyes of some grazing and small animals, plus eyes, heads and faces of dogs, cats and similar animals. Bird recognition identifies eyes, faces and bodies. The Animal/Bird setting removes the need to switch between the two.

The camera also recognizes whole or partial Car/Train and Airplane subjects and insect heads. AI-based Real-time Tracking automatically follows a selected subject after you specify it and half-press the shutter button.

Up to 693 phase-detection points cover approximately 79% of the image area. The camera combines phase-detection and contrast AF, with phase detection supporting fast and stable focus acquisition even in AF-S mode. Continuous shooting reaches up to 8 fps with AF/AE tracking using the mechanical shutter and up to 7 fps during silent shooting. Continuous shooting supports approximately 320 JPEG images.

4K Video and Cinematic Tools

The Sony a7CR records full-frame 4K at 60/50p. Full-frame and Super 35mm formats are available. Super 35mm recording uses full pixel readout without pixel binning and condenses approximately 2.6 times the data required for QFHD 4K into high-detail 4K with minimal moire and jaggies.

S-Cinetone provides natural mid-tones, skin tones, soft colors and highlights for a cinematic look without color grading. S-Log3 provides 14+ stops of latitude, while S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine provide further post-processing control. User-selected LUTs can preview processed footage.

Focus breathing compensation uses Clear Image Zoom with compatible lenses to maintain a consistent angle of view during focus changes. Breathing metadata can support compensation during post production with Catalyst Browse/Prepare. The camera can output 16-bit RAW video through HDMI to an external recorder while recording XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K or XAVC S-I 4K to internal card media. Proxy recording is also available.

Internal recording supports 10-bit 4:2:2 video with Long GOP or Intra compression. HLG supports the BT.2020 color space with 10-bit depth. Active Mode combines the stabilization unit, gyro sensors and optimized algorithm to provide stable handheld movie footage. Compatible lenses with built-in image stabilization can work with the body for effective control, stable framing and smooth footage.

Vari-Angle Touch Monitor

The vari-angle LCD monitor supports framing from different positions and angles for stills and movies. Touch operation controls the menu and function menus. Frequently used functions and settings can be registered in My Menu by long-pressing menu items or pressing the Delete key.
