Black Diffusion FX Filter

The Tiffen Black Diffusion/FX Filter reduces fine sharp detail while keeping the effect on bounced and reduced highlights minimal. It creates a softer, ethereal image with little loss of clarity or detail. Small aberrations diffuse light entering the lens and spread it more evenly, creating a soft glow instead of the sharp, well-defined image produced without a filter.

The filter keeps color saturation reduction to a minimum. On close-ups, facial details such as the eyes and hair remain sharp on the focal plane, while finer and unwanted skin detail blends smoothly away. It also slightly reduces contrast and can create an ethereal, dream-like atmosphere in photographs.

Controlled Softening

Black Diffusion/FX controls the optical softening element embedded in the filter. This helps prevent specular highlights from becoming overly blurred, which could otherwise produce stronger inhalation. The result keeps the soft image quality from detracting from the overall image detail.

The filter diffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. The 1/4 density provides less softening than the 1/2 density.

Sizes and Densities

The Tiffen Black Diffusion FX Filter is available in three sizes: 6.6 x 6.6″ / 167.6 x 167.6mm, 4 x 5.65″ / 101.6 x 143.5mm, and 4 x 4″ / 101.6 x 101.6mm. Available densities include 1, 1/2, 1/4, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Tiffen makes these filters using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinds it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
