The Sony SEL2870GM FE 28-70mm F2 GM Standard Zoom Lens combines the flexibility of a standard zoom with image quality that rivals prime lenses. As Sony’s first G Master standard zoom with a constant F2 maximum aperture, it delivers bright images, refined bokeh, strong autofocus performance, and a versatile focal range for portraits, sports, live events, movies, and more. Its compact, lightweight design gives professionals exceptional creative freedom without compromising image quality.

Prime-Level Image Quality

Advanced optical design and simulation help this zoom lens achieve resolution that rivals prime lenses. Three XA elements support high corner-to-corner sharpness at F2 across the zoom range. A floating focus system enables close focusing down to 0.38 m (1.25 ft) throughout the zoom range. One ED element and three Super ED elements control axial and lateral chromatic aberration, helping maintain clarity and resolution across the image.

Bright F2 Performance

The constant F2 aperture provides consistent brightness across the zoom range and supports a shallow depth of field. G Master optics create soft, refined bokeh for dimensional images. Controlled spherical aberration balances resolution and bokeh, while the 11-blade circular aperture helps produce smooth, attractive ball-shaped bokeh. The design also suppresses onion-ring bokeh and colour bleeding.

Fast and Precise Autofocus

Four XD linear motors drive the large F2 focus group with speed and precision. The lens delivers reliable focus tracking and fast response for demanding subjects such as weddings and sports. It supports the 120 fps burst capability of the α9 III, with tracking continuing during zooming.

Professional Still and Movie Control

The lens offers Linear Response MF for intuitive manual focus control, adjustable zoom ring torque, an aperture ring with click ON/OFF control, two customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch, and an AF/MF switch. Its 86 mm filter diameter and hood window support convenient variable filter operation.

For movie production, subdued focus breathing supports refined imagery. F2 depth of field enables smooth rack focus and zoom effects. The quiet XD linear motors and new aperture unit support high frame rate 4K 120p and FHD 240p recording, while α body breathing compensation is supported.

Compact, Rugged G Master Design

Despite its constant F2 aperture and advanced optics, the lens measures only 92.9 x 139.8 mm (3-3/4 x 5-5/8) and weighs 918 g (32.4 oz). Silicone gaskets, a rubber ring around the lens mount, and protection across critical areas help resist dust and moisture in challenging outdoor conditions. A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel contaminants and makes cleaning easier. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II and optical design also reduce flare and ghosting for clear images when strong light sources appear in the frame.
